A shame about scrapping the idea of a ground up design - I hope that doesn't lead to a lack of innovation. That's what really leads Apple along! Although if they just make a killer phone (I'm sure they will at some point...) it's bound to sell buckets loads!
Uber
It just said it was going with off the shelf parts, so hopefully the design can boast innovation.

Actually, he is right. The two use different protocols when streaming. The video portion of AirPlay is done differently and does not require the private key. It just employs setting up a "server" whenever its being utilized. I have it set up on XBMC, and it works just as it would on an AppleTV.
The audio portion, that requires the key, has finally brought it full-circle. Can't wait to have it on my XBMC box.
I never said the audio and the video didn't work differently, what I said was AirTunes no longer exists. AirPlay contains what was AirTunes. Apple no longer use the label 'AirTunes' anywhere. http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/features/airplay.html only talks about AirPlay for instance. The iTunes streaming button is now called AirPlay too.
AirPlay video simply sends a URL to the video resource to the other device, and the other device plays the file at the URL which is served by the host. AirPlay audio uses the RAOP protocol.
There isn't a misprint in the article title as the poster claimed - the AirTunes moniker doesn't exist anymore

I agree that the expandability of the 24inch imac is impressive, but until I see ease of upgradability as well Im all for a mid range. Its also about the CPU, the C2D's are nice, but their not really a match for their desktop counterparts, there are some of us that want the power of a desktop but dont have the budget for the xeon range...
I'm right with you when you say "that some of us want the power of a desktop but dont have the budget for the xeon range." Also I dont like all in one solutions. However, the 24" might be apple's way of saying that's close enough. Plus looking at what Macworld had to say about the 2.16 C2D and the potential for the 24" 2.33 it sure does narrow the performance some what and this might be what apple is thinking.
More significant, the 2.16GHz system narrowed the performance gap between iMac and Mac Pro product lines. With twice the number of processor cores, all running faster than the iMac, the Mac Pro had a definite advantage in this match up. But because not all applications and tasks take full advantage of the Mac multiprocessing capabilities, most results showed the Mac Pro between 20 and 30 percent faster than the 2.16GHz iMac. I expect that test results of the new 24-inch modelwith its faster graphics and the optional 2.33GHz processor upgradecould close this performance gap even further.
http://www.macworld.com/2006/09/firstlooks/imacbench/index.php
I cant wait to see the benchmarks on the 24". :)
But dont get me wrong I would still prefer a headless tower.

Give me a break. The industry completely understands that none of these laptops is shipping for at least a week or two. As long as apple SHIPS machines about the same time as everyone else, what "pantsing" has taken place outside of the minds of apple fanboys?
Apple always claims that Macs are better than PCs. Dell and HP aren't making those same claims. I've never heard either company publicly dump on Apple. Apple dumps on them on TV all the time.
So with all this dumping going on, Apple better have at least equal hardware. They were first out with the core 2 duo xeon and with yonah.
But with Merom/Conroe, make no mistake, they have been pansted.
If they don't come out soon, there will be a public flogging.
Now mind you, I say this as an investor, not as an enthusiast.
Being both an enthusiast and investor makes me as a whole a critical enthusiast, but far from a fanboy or apologist.
We expect that we can throw stones at Windows, but that Apple will never be bruised? (Get it...windows breaks...and apples bruise if you hit them..haha)

Anyone got numbers on percentage of computer users who play games? I never play games. Am I in a minority?
The target is Windows users, Most windows users between 10 and 25 play some game or another. I have no clue about OS X users on the Macs but probably 20 % do.
Apple is interested in selling hardware and putting a hurt on PC companies like Dell and others. They can sell a heck of a lot of machines to the PC market and double or quatruple their market share in just one year alone. That is what BootCamp is there for.

Well at least people who have brought MacPros can breathe easy now for a while. Basically because these Kentsfield's arent pin compatable with Woodcrest.
However, trying to find a product that can take conroe is sort of pointless. There's no proof or rumours that Apple are working on a Midrange tower. AND even if Apple did release one with just a Conroe chip in it, it would eat iMac sales.
It'd be nice to see one, but not likely

I really can't believe some of the posts that have been made here.
To suggest that the people of Africa deserve to be wiped out by aids as they haven't evolved or kept up with the rest of the world is beyond contempt. I want to say something else but I'm just totally lost for words by your comments.
I notice no one has commented on the Pope and the Catholic Church forbidding the use of condoms and the effect that has on spreading infection even further.
Forget about the donation that will be made for every sale. Far more important is the number of people that will be educated on life in third world countries as a result of the promotion. We could do with a lot more companies running similar initiatives.
Its a bit sad that people are more interested in a new nano, or a core duo 2 macbook than they are in all the people that die every second of every day. Deaths that the western world could do something about but chooses not to. I for one am ashamed that we do so little to help so many people that suffer so much.

My Mom needs a new iMac due to screen issues
Isn't that kind of like throwing the baby out along with the bath water? This is why an all in one seems so wasteful to me.

CMD-X does NOT cut a file and let you move it. I am in SL right now. DOESN'T work.
Well...well
The whole cut and paste concept, as it was initially implemented, was based on how in real life one was handling documents and folders, while working on your desk. You do not cut a document to move it to another folder. In real life you move it, you drag and drop.
The undo was the most nicely implemented feature of all OS.
And yes, it was MacOS.

Kind of a huge gap, don'cha think? For an extra $100 I can nearly TRIPLE the capacity? Why would I even consider a 30 GB model?
Exactly. More money for Apple.

Liked the short advert.
Did make me laugh.
Apple should rip out all there roofing at there HQ and replace it with Solar Panels and replace the heating systems with CHRP systems.
That would help a lot.

I think we are likely to see another aluminum unibody, but without optical drive and HOPEFULLY with both an Air style blade SSD and a slot for a standard 2.5" hard drive. Add thunderbolt (and hopefully a third party TB to firewire hub of some sort), remove FireWire, remove optical, call it a day. That would be a very, very solid update.

It's actually a trap for Nokia. Nokia gets a substantial portion of its market share from selling low priced phones. People who buy cheap phones don't have as much money to buy apps. App developers who want to make money will develop apps for people with money who buy the more expensive (higher profit margin) smartphones. Then customers who want a rich app environment won't buy the cheap phones because they won't have as many new cool apps. They'll buy iPhones. It's a viscous circle. Apple doesn't need market share to keep printing money (and investing it in R&D and marketing for new cool products).

That's revenue not profit, their profit was $5 billion in 2005 so $50M is about 1% of that, remember that the money from iTunes is practically all profit as their are no real costs for Disney (other than giving Apple a few video files which probably costs $100 000 a year maximum.)
Yes, but from the original Article.
In addition, Iger said the company expects over $50 million in revenue over the first year of the program.
You're right that they probably make better margins on this revenue, but it ain't pure profit.

Not sure if it's already been pointed out, but GAP is also releasing a Red line of clothes tomorrow to support AIDS in Africa. I wonder if Oprah will be visiting various retail stores supporting the Red thing tomorrow.
I really want the Red SLVR phone, but it's not sold here.

Here in Chicago, The Gap and The Apple store are a block from each other on Michigan Ave. where they taped. I also believe they went across the street to the newly opened Motorola Store to the new stuff there.
I am sure this has been said but I wanted to get my post in...
Looks cool, just hope the $10 donation does not mean it will cost more. Red is not THAT great.
No, it'll be the same 199 cause another $10 and whoa... way over price for charity

Until Leopard is out we wont see the true value of these babies. Also by then some of the apps will take advantage of the muti-cores and multi-cpus, and the changes to the OS will allow applications not written for more than 1 core to take some advantage also. So like I said Leopard will be the one showing the true potential of these babies. Can't wait!!!!!!!

Hear hear, but its unlikely, they just updated the current models with more brightness and contrast ratio. I doubt they'd change it so quickly.
